RECRUITING RULES FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL
ATHLETE AND PARENTS
The following list of rules will help you to understand the recruiting process and educate you on the limitations put on the college coach during recruiting.
JUNIOR YEAR:
- A college coach may not begin written correspondence with a prospect until September 1st of her junior year.
- A college coach may receive a telephone call at any time during high school from a prospect. However, a college coach may not return the call or initiate a call until July 1st after the prospects junior year.
- A college coach may not meet with a prospect or her parents off campus during the prospect’s junior year. You may however, meet with the college coach on their campus.
- A coach and prospect may e-mail at the start of junior year.
SENIOR YEAR:
A coach may begin calling a prospect on July 1st prior to her senior year.
A coach can only call a prospect once per week. If a call with the prospect or parents goes beyond an initial greeting or message, then the call is completed.
Once a coach has completed a call in a given week, they cannot return a message left by the prospect or the prospect’s parents.
- A coach may meet with a prospect off campus three times during their senior year. Senior year officially begins on July 1st prior to the new school year.
- If the prospect is competing in a game or tournament, the college coach may not talk to the prospect until the game or entire tournament is complete.
OFFICIAL VISITS:
- Defined: When the expenses, (food, travel, lodging) are paid for by the institution the prospect in visiting.
The visit may not exceed 48 hours.
Each prospect is limited to five official visits.
The school may pay for food and lodging for parents but not transportation.
UNOFFICIAL VISITS:
- There is no limit to the number of unofficial visits a prospect can take.
- A prospect may visit a university at any time during high school.
- The university may not pay for any expense for the prospect during the unofficial visit.
- The university can provide complimentary admissions for a maximum of three people (the prospect and two companions) to an athletic event on campus.
